OBJECTIVES: this study aims to compare the clinical outcomes of traditional and digital crown extension guides in the aesthetic restoration of anterior teeth. Additionally, the study will analyze the differences in the results of various digital crown extension guides in anterior aesthetic restorations. METHODS: Sixty-two patients who required aesthetic restoration of their anterior teeth were selected for this study. The patients had a total of 230 anterior teeth and were randomly divided into three groups: a control group of 22 cases who received diagnostic wax-up with pressure film, an experimental group 1 of 20 cases who received 3D printed digital models with pressure film, and an experimental group 2 of 20 patients who received digital dual-positioning guides. The control group had a total of 84 anterior teeth, experimental group 1 had 72 anterior teeth, and experimental group 2 had 74 anterior teeth. The study compared three methods for fabricating crown extension guides: the control group used the diagnostic wax-up plus compression film method, while experimental group 1 used compression film on 3D printed models and experimental group 2 used 3D printed digital dual-positioning crown extension guides. After the crown lengthening surgery, the control group patients wore DMG resin temporary crown material for gingival contouring, while the experimental group patients wore 3D printed resin temporary crowns for the same purpose. The patients were followed up in the outpatient clinic after wearing temporary crowns for 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months, respectively. The clinical results were evaluated in terms of marginal fit, red aesthetic index, and white aesthetic index. RESULTS: Based on the statistical analysis, the experimental group required significantly fewer follow-up visits and less time for guide design and fabrication compared to the control group. Additionally, the surgical time for the experimental group was significantly shorter than that of the control group. During the postoperative period between the 1st and 3rd month, the PES index scores for the marginal gingival level, proximal, and distal mesiodistal gingival papillae of the experimental group showed a trend of superiority over those of the control group. By the 6th month, the marginal gingival level exhibited a significant difference between the experimental and control groups. The experimental group demonstrated superior results to the control group in terms of shape, contour, and volume of the teeth, color, surface texture, and transparency of the restorations, and features during the 1st and 3rd postoperative months. In the 6th month, the comparative results indicated that the experimental group continued to exhibit superior outcomes to the control group in terms of the shape, color, surface texture, and transparency of the restorations, as well as the characteristics of the teeth. Additionally, the experimental group demonstrated significantly fewer gingival alterations than the control group at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months post-procedure, with this difference being statistically significant. Furthermore, the combination of 3D printing technology and restorative techniques was utilized, resulting in consistent patient satisfaction. CONCLUSION: Digitalisation plays an important role in anterior aesthetic restorations. The use of digital technology to manage the entire process of anterior cosmetic restorations can improve restorative results, reduce the number of follow-up appointments, shorten consultation time, and achieve better patient satisfaction.

RESUMO

Zirconia crown has been widely used in the field of prosthodontics. Traditional zirconia exhibits excellent mechanical properties but lacks translucency. The introduction of transparent zirconia significantly enhances its aesthetic performance. In clinical applications, factors affecting the aesthetic results of full zirconia crown should be comprehensively considered, and the most suitable restoration should be chosen. Additionally, clinicians need to design appropriate tooth preparation dimensions and methods based on an individual patient's actual situation. During the clinical bonding process of zirconia, proper surface treatment of the tooth and restoration is essential. The selection of suitable adhesives is crucial for achieving optimal bonding strength and aesthetics.

RESUMO

Complicated crown root fracture is a serious combined fracture of the enamel, dentin, and cementum in dental trauma. The treatment method is complicated. During the procedure, the condition of pulp, periodontal, and tooth body should be thoroughly evaluated, and a multidisciplinary approach combined with sequential treatment is recommended. This case reported the different treatment and repair processes of one case of two affected teeth after complicated crown root fracture of upper anterior teeth, including regrafting of broken crown after flap surgery at the first visit, direct resin repair to remove broken fragments, and pulp treatment and post-crown repair at the second visit. After 18 months of follow-up, the preservation treatment of the affected teeth with complicated crown root fracture was achieved. Therefore, fragment reattachment and post-crown restoration are feasible treatment options for children with complicated crown root fracture.

BACKGROUND: Yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and alumina are the most commonly used dental esthetic crown materials. This study aimed to provide detailed information on the comparison between yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and alumina, the two materials most often used for esthetic crowns in dentistry. METHODOLOGY: The ground-state energy of the materials was calculated using the Cambridge Serial Total Energy Package (CASTEP) code, which employs a first-principles method based on density functional theory (DFT). The electronic exchange-correlation energy was evaluated using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) within the Perdew (Burke) Ernzerhof scheme. RESULTS: Optimization of the geometries and investigation of the optical properties, dynamic stability, band structures, refractive indices, and mechanical properties of these materials contribute to a holistic understanding of these materials. Geometric optimization of YSZ provides important insights into its dynamic stability based on observations of its crystal structure and polyhedral geometry, which show stable configurations. Alumina exhibits a distinctive charge, kinetic, and potential (CKP) geometry, which contributes to its interesting structural framework and molecular-level stability. The optical properties of alumina were evaluated using pseudo-atomic computations, demonstrating its responsiveness to external stimuli. The refractive indices, reflectance, and dielectric functions indicate that the transmission of light by alumina depends on numerous factors that are essential for the optical performance of alumina as a material for esthetic crowns. The band structures of both the materials were explored, and the band gap of alumina was determined to be 5.853 eV. In addition, the band structure describes electronic transitions that influence the conductivity and optical properties of a material. The stability of alumina can be deduced from its bandgap, an essential property that determines its use as a dental material. Refractive indices are vital optical properties of esthetic crown materials. Therefore, the ability to understand their refractive-index graphs explains their transparency and color distortion through how the material responds to light..The regulated absorption characteristics exhibited by YSZ render it a highly attractive option for the development of esthetic crowns, as it guarantees minimal color distortion. CONCLUSION: The acceptability of materials for esthetic crowns is strongly determined by mechanical properties such as elastic stiffness constants, Young's modulus, and shear modulus. YSZ is a highly durable material for dental applications, owing to its superior mechanical strength.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to conduct a comparison of trueness and physical and surface properties among five distinct types of additive manufactured (AM) zirconia crowns and zirconia crowns produced using the subtractive manufacturing (SM). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Zirconia crowns were fabricated using five distinct techniques, each varying in the method of slurry transfer and photocuring source. Each experimental group utilized either one of the four digital light processing (DLP)-based techniques (DLP spreading, DLP spreading gradation, DLP vat and DLP circular spreading) or the stereolithography (SLA)-based technique (SLA spreading). The control (CON) group employed SM. To assess accuracy, trueness was measured between the scan and reference data. To analyze the physical properties, voids were examined using high-energy spiral micro-computed tomography scans, and the crystal structure analysis was performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Surface roughness was assessed through laser scanning microscopy. RESULTS: Differences in the trueness of internal surfaces of crowns were found among the groups (P < 0.05). Trueness varied across the measurement surfaces (occlusal, lateral, and marginal) in all the groups except for the DLP spreading gradation group (P < 0.05). Voids were observed in all AM groups. All groups showed similar XRD patterns. All AM groups showed significantly greater surface roughness compared to the CON group (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The AM zirconia crowns showed bubbles and a rougher surface compared to the SM crowns. All groups exhibited typical zirconia traits and trueness levels within clinically acceptable limits, suggesting that current zirconia AM techniques could be suitable for dental applications.

PURPOSE: To validate an innovative 3D volumetric method of evaluating tissue changes proposed by Lee et al in 2020 by comparing the results of this method-in which the scanned peri-implant surfaces were transformed, visualized, and analyzed as 3D objects-to the results reported by an existing method based on calculation of the mean distance between measured surfaces. The null hypothesis was that there was no statistically significant difference between the two methods. Additionally, the present study evaluated peri-implant tissue changes 5 years after single implant placement in the esthetic zone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Both methods were applied to 11 oral implant site casts (6 maxillary central incisor sites, 5 maxillary lateral incisor sites) taken from 11 patients at crown placement and at follow-up examinations 5 years later. The methods are based on digital workflows in which the reference and 5-year casts are scanned and the resulting STL files are superimposed and analyzed for three regions of interest (mesial papilla, central area, and distal papilla). The volumetric changes reported by the Lee et al method and the mean distance method were calculated and compared using the Spearman rank correlation coefficient (P < .01) and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (P < .05). RESULTS: The correlation between the two sets of measurements was very high (Spearman rank correlation coefficient = 0.885). The new volumetric method indicated a mean volume loss of 2.82 mm3 (SD: 5.06), while the method based on the measurement of mean distance showed a mean volume loss of 2.92 mm3 (SD: 4.43; Wilcoxon signed-rank test result: P = .77). No statistically significant difference was found. The two methods gave equivalent results, and the null hypothesis was accepted. CONCLUSIONS: The new volumetric method was validated and can be considered a trustworthy tool.

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the difference in retention between implant-supported restorations with and without surface modification of the implant abutments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients with singletooth implants were restored with cement-retained (Multilink N, Ivoclar) restorations using titanium base abutments (Variobase, Straumann) and randomly assigned surface modifications. Group 1 used nonmodified abutments, group 2 used sandblasted abutments, and group 3 used sandblasted abutments followed by an application of metal primer. All patients were recalled for a baseline examination 6 months after crown placement. The pull-out strength and intergroup distribution of mean pull-out strength were assessed. To assess differences between the three groups, intergroup statistical comparison of continuous variables was done using one-way ANOVA with Tukey correction for multiple group comparisons. RESULTS: The results of the intergroup mean pull-out strength distribution revealed that the distribution of mean ± SD pull-out strength in group 1, group 2, and group 3 were 220.79 ± 94.23, 488.64 ± 84.12, and 705.46 ± 112.75 Ncm, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Sandblasting followed by the application of metal primer produced the highest retention of porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns to titanium base abutments, followed by sandblasting alone, with the least retention being observed with no surface treatment.

BACKGROUND: Marginal fit significantly impacts the long-term success of dental restorations. Different pattern fabrication methods, including hand-waxing, milling, or 3D printing, may affect restorations accuracy. The effect of porcelain firing cycles on the marginal fit of metal-ceramic restorations remains controversial, with conflicting findings across studies. PURPOSE: The aim was to evaluate the potential effects of multiple porcelain firings (3, 5, 7 cycles) as well as pattern fabrication method (conventional hand-waxing, milling, and 3D printing) on the marginal adaptation of 3-unit implant-supported metal-ceramic fixed partial dentures. It was hypothesized that neither the wax pattern fabrication method nor repeated ceramic firings would significantly affect the marginal adaptation of metal-ceramic crowns. METHODS: In this in-vitro study, 30 Cobalt-Chromium alloy frameworks were fabricated based on pattern made through three techniques: conventional hand-waxing, CAD-CAM milling, and CAD-CAM 3D printing (n = 10 per group). Sixteen locations were marked on each abutment to measure the vertical marginal gap at four stages: before porcelain veneering and after 3, 5, and 7 firing cycles. The vertical marginal gap was measured using direct microscopic technique at ×80 magnification. Mean vertical marginal gap values were calculated and two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tests were used for inter-group comparisons (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The 3D printing group showed significantly lower (P<0.001) mean vertical marginal gaps (60-76 µm) compared to the milling (77-115 µm) and conventional hand-waxing (102-110 µm) groups. The milling group exhibited a significant vertical gap increase after 3 firing cycles (P<0.001); while the conventional (P = 0.429) and 3D printing groups (P = 0.501) showed no significant changes after 7 firing cycles. Notably, the vertical marginal gap in all groups remained below the clinically acceptable threshold of 120 µm. CONCLUSION: CAD-CAM 3D printing provided superior marginal fit compared to CAD-CAM milling and conventional hand-wax pattern fabrication methods. The impact of porcelain firing on the mean marginal gap was significant only in the milling group. All three fabrication techniques yielded clinically acceptable vertical marginal adaptation after repeated firings. Additive manufacturing holds promise to produce precise implant-supported prostheses.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether post-milling firing and material type affect the fabrication trueness and internal fit of lithium disilicate crowns. METHODS: A prefabricated cobalt chromium abutment was digitized to design a mandibular right first molar crown. This design file was used to fabricate crowns from different lithium disilicate ceramics (nano-lithium disilicate (AM), fully crystallized lithium disilicate (IN), advanced lithium disilicate (TS), and lithium disilicate (EX)) (n = 10). Crowns, the abutment, and the crowns when seated on the abutment were digitized by using an intraoral scanner. Fabrication trueness was assessed by using the root mean square method, while the internal fit was evaluated according to the triple scan method. These processes were repeated after the post-milling firing of AM, TS, and EX. Paired samples t-tests were used to analyze the effect of post-milling firing within AM, TS, and EX, while all materials were compared with 1-way analysis of variance and Tukey HSD tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Post-milling firing reduced the surface deviations and internal gap of AM and EX (P ≤ 0.014). AM mostly had higher deviations and internal gaps than other materials (P ≤ 0.030). CONCLUSIONS: Post-milling firing increased the trueness and internal fit of tested nano-lithium disilicate and lithium disilicate ceramics. Nano-lithium disilicate mostly had lower trueness and higher internal gap; however, the maximum meaningful differences among tested materials were small. Therefore, the adjustment duration and clinical fit of tested crowns may be similar. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Tested lithium disilicate ceramics may be suitable alternatives to one another in terms of fabrication trueness and internal fit, considering the small differences in measured deviations and internal gaps.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical trial was to assess and compare the clinical outcomes of Bioflx crowns (BFCs) with stainless steel crowns (SSCs) in primary molars (PMs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective split-mouth randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted between March 2022 and June 2023. Thirty-eight patients (17 females and 21 males) with a mean age of 5.21 years participated in this study. Each child (n = 38) received both SSC and BFC. Clinical and radiographic follow-up was performed at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months using the modified United States Public Health System scoring criteria to evaluate various parameters. RESULTS: At the 3 and 6 months' follow-up, no significant difference was observed between the two groups. However, at 1-year follow-up, a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) was evident in the frequency between the two groups for the criteria of crown retention after cementation and anatomic form of the crown, indicating a preference for SSC over prototype 1 BFC. CONCLUSION: The 12-month results indicate that BFC performed similarly to the established SSC for the restoration of PMs providing better esthetics.

PURPOSE: To evaluation the effect of modified triangular flap-secondary healing (MTF-S) on the treatment of mandibular impacted wisdom teeth with full or partial bone impaction. METHODS: A total of 207 patients with mandibular impacted wisdom teeth were selected in Shaoxing Stomatological Hospital from June 2022 to June 2023. Among them, 86 patients had completely impacted wisdom teeth (group A), and 121 patients had partially impacted wisdom teeth (group B). All patients had bilateral impacted wisdom teeth. One of the wisdom teeth was removed first and was sutured with triangular flap-primary healing (TF-P). The other wisdom tooth was removed two weeks later and was sutured with MTF-S. Patients in groups A and B were divided into two subgroups based on suture methods, with TF-P used for group A1 and B1, and MTF-S used for groups A2 and B2. Perioperative indicators, including surgical time, root loss rate, and completeness of extraction sockets were recorded; Postoperative complications of four groups, including pain, swelling, and limited mouth opening were compared. SPSS 22.0 software package was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The surgical time of group A1, A2, B1 and B2 was (17.69±3.28), (18.22±3.06), (12.37±3.72) and (12.64±4.13) minutes, respectively. The surgical time of group A1 and A2 was significantly longer than that of group B1 and B2 (P<0.05). Seven days after surgery, the VAS scores of group A1, A2, B1 and B2 were (1.17±0.34), (0.93±0.29), (0.48±0.15) and (0.76±0.21), respectively. The VAS scores of group B1 and B2 were lower than those of group A1 and A2, and group A2 was lower than group A1 and B2 was higher than group B1 group(P<0.05). On the 1st day, 3rd day, and 7th day after surgery, the swelling degree in group A1 was greater than that in group B1, and the swelling degree in group B1 was greater than that in group A2 and B2(P<0.05); while the limitation of mouth opening mouth in group A2 and B2 was lower than that in group A1 and B1, and the limitation of opening mouth in group B2 was lower than that in group A2(P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with partially impacted wisdom teeth, the extraction of completely impacted wisdom teeth has a longer surgical time. For completely impacted wisdom teeth, MTF-S is beneficial for reducing postoperative pain, swelling and mouth opening limitations. For partially impacted wisdom teeth, MTF-S is beneficial for reducing postoperative swelling and mouth opening limitations, but the effect is not significant in reducing patient pain.

BACKGROUND Several auxiliary features have been proposed to achieve sustainable retention for short-prepared dental crowns; however, achieving retention is challenging. This study aimed to assess the impact of increased total occlusal convergence and auxiliary preparation factors like box and groove on the retention form of short tooth preparations. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighty resin machine-milled dies with a height of 3 mm and a deep chamfer margin of 1 mm were prepared to mimic the short-prepared molar. Initially, 2 teeth were prepared following the guidelines, and the total occlusal convergence was kept at 10° and 20°, respectively. Auxiliary features such as the proximal box and buccal groove were prepared on separate 20° dies. Eighty dies were prepared with 10 samples each for 10°, 20°, 20° with proximal box and 20° with buccal groove for zirconia (n=40) and metal crowns (n=40). Cementation was done with glass ionomer luting cement, and a pull-off test was conducted. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc fisher least significant difference test (P<0.05). RESULTS The highest mean was observed in the proximal box group with the metal crown (14.59), and the lowest in the group with 20° zirconia crowns (9.12). Within groups, the highest retentive values were found for the 20° taper with proximal box preparation; the lowest was for the 20° taper group. CONCLUSIONS Within the study limitations, it could be concluded that incorporating a proximal box or buccal groove in short tooth preparations with an increased total occlusal convergence improved retentive values.

Additive manufacturing enables local grading of the stiffness of dental implants through targeted adjustment of the manufacturing parameters to meet patient specific requirements. The extent to which such a manufacturing approach affects the interaction between the implant body and the surrounding bone, and what grading is optimal, is currently insufficiently investigated. This study investigates the effect of different Young's modulus grading approaches on stresses in the peri-implant bone via finite element analysis. The implant geometry was kept constant and in the case of the implant a node-dependent elastic modulus was assigned. In this way, a vertical, a radial and three torus based grading approaches were created and examined. A load was then applied directly to the occlusal surface of the implant crown. It was found that a local grading utilizing a torus shape was most favourable in terms of an effective stress peak reduction. The best torus shape tested achieved a 22 % reduction of maximum principal stress and 6 % reduction of minimum principal stress compared to the uniform material. In clinical settings, this may provide benefits in situations of overload. Based on the results, a graded stiffness in dental implants appears to be of interest for developing advanced, patient-specific implant solutions.

RESUMO

Neanderthal anterior teeth are very large and have a distinctive morphology characterized by robust 'shovel-shaped' crowns. These features are frequently seen as adaptive responses in dissipating heavy mechanical loads resulting from masticatory and non-masticatory activities. Although the long-standing debate surrounding this hypothesis has played a central role in paleoanthropology, is still unclear if Neanderthal anterior teeth can resist high mechanical loads or not. A novel way to answer this question is to use a multidisciplinary approach that considers together tooth architecture, dental wear and jaw movements. The aim of this study is to functionally reposition the teeth of Le Moustier 1 (a Neanderthal adolescent) and Qafzeh 9 (an early Homo sapiens adolescent) derived from wear facet mapping, occlusal fingerprint analysis and physical dental restoration methods. The restored dental arches are then used to perform finite element analysis on the left central maxillary incisor during edge-to-edge occlusion. The results show stress distribution differences between Le Moustier 1 and Qafzeh 9, with the former displaying higher tensile stress in enamel around the lingual fossa but lower concentration of stress in the lingual aspect of the root surface. These results seem to suggest that the presence of labial convexity, lingual tubercle and of a large root surface in Le Moustier 1 incisor helps in dissipating mechanical stress. The absence of these dental features in Qafzeh 9 is compensated by the presence of a thicker enamel, which helps in reducing the stress in the tooth crown.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of ceramic type and thickness on the masking ability and final aesthetic effects of chairside machinable all-ceramic crowns. METHODS: Six kinds from three types chairside machinable ceramic materials (IPS e.max CAD HT/MT/LT, IPS Empress LT, and VITA Suprinity HT/T) in shade A2 were fabricated to slice specimens into 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm-thick sections (n=10). The color parameters of the specimens against black and white tiles and four resin substrates (A2, A4, B3, and C4 shade) were measured with a spectrophotometer. The translucency parameter (TP) was calculated using color parameters measured over standard white and black backgrounds. The color differences (ΔE) were calculated between there substrate shades (A4, B3, C4 ) and A2 shade (control group). Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed on the TP values. The two va-riables were ceramic type and ceramic thickness. Three-way ANOVA was used to determine the effects of ceramic materials, ceramic thickness, and substrate shades on the ΔE values, followed by Tukey test for multiple comparisons (α=0.05). RESULTS: Ceramic type, ceramic thickness, and substrate shade significantly affected the ΔE values (P<0.001). The L* and b* values of the specimens increased with increasing ceramic thickness, except in substrate A2, whereas the ΔE values decreased. The color difference of all 1.0 mm-thick specimens or all specimens over the substrates C4 shade exceeded the clinically acceptable threshold (ΔE>3.3). CONCLUSIONS: The masking ability of chairside machinable all-ceramic crowns is influenced by ceramic type and thickness, and ceramic material. The thickness of ceramic less than 2.0 mm cannot mask the gray shade abutment.

This randomized, controlled clinical trial compares the clinical performance of glass-fibre and resorbable polylactic acid (PLA) intracanal posts used to restore carious primary incisors in young patients. The study sample includes 180 primary upper central incisors of 90 children aged 3 to 4 years. All patients were randomly divided into two equal groups of 45 children who received PLA and glass-fibre (GFP) intracanal posts. The clinical assessment of incisor restorations was carried out immediately upon completion and at months 3, 6 and 12 according to the following criteria: anatomical form, marginal adaptation, surface roughness, marginal pigmentation, colour match, secondary caries and contact point. The Gingival Index (GI), the Bleeding Index (Cowell modification; mBI), and bite force (BF) were measured. At the 3-month follow-up, the occlusal BF of patients who received PLA posts was higher than the baseline; the GI and mBI scores were lower, by contrast (p < 0.05). This tendency was even more pronounced 6 and 12 months after the restoration. The incidence of side effects or symptoms (apical inflammation, cervical fracture, loosening of the crown) after the PLA posts was significantly lower than after the GFP (p < 0.05). No statistically significant differences were present between the two groups with respect to colour matching, anatomical form, marginal adaptation, marginal pigmentation, surface roughness, occlusal contact and secondary caries. Based on the results, applying PLA intracanal posts and cyanoacrylate to residual anterior crowns in young children can improve their gingival health, reduce side effects, and increase the likelihood of successful restoration.

RESUMO

Children with dentinogenesis imperfecta require restorative or prosthodontic treatment to minimize the aesthetic and functional impact of the condition. This clinical case report describes the oral rehabilitation procedure in a 12-year-old patient with dentinogenesis imperfecta type II using nanoceramic resin crowns fabricated with Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology and the patient's progression over eight years. This minimal intervention approach enabled functional and aesthetic reestablishment along with tooth wear prevention. The result simplified an extensive prosthetic procedure and facilitated an affordable rehabilitation for the young patient while providing excellent long-term outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to examine the influence of the build angle on the accuracy (trueness and precision) of 3D printed crowns, table-tops and veneers with a hybrid resin-ceramic material. METHODS: One crown, on table-top and one veneer were printed in five different build angles (0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°) (n = 50) with the digital light processing (DLP) system (Varseo XS, Bego) using hybrid resin (Varseo Smile Crownplus A3, Bego). All printed restorations were scanned using the laboratory scanner (D2000, 3Shape) and matched onto the initial reference design in metrology software (Geomagic Control X, 3D Systems). The root mean square error (RMSE) was calculated between the scanned and reference data. The data was statistically analyzed using the Tukey multiple comparison test and Wilcoxon multiple comparison test. RESULTS: The crown group showed higher trueness at 30° (0.021 ± 0.002) and 45° (0.020 ± 0.002), and table-tops at 0° (0.015 ± 0.001) and 30° (0.014 ± 0.001) (p < 0.0001). Veneers demonstrated higher trueness at 30° (0.016 ± 0.002) (p < 0.0001). All three restoration types demonstrated the lowest trueness at a 90° build angle and portrayed deviations along the z axis. The veneer and table-top groups showed the lowest precision at 90° (veneers: 0.021 ± 0.008; table-tops: 0.013 ± 0.003). The crown group portrayed the lowest precision at 45° (0.017 ± 0.005) (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: The build angle of DLP-printed hybrid resin-ceramic restorations influences their accuracy. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Considering the build angle is important to achieve a better accuracy of 3D-printed resin-ceramic hybrid restorations. This may help predict or avoid the interference points between a restoration and a die and minimize the clinical adjustments.

OBJECTIVES: Natural teeth and dental restorations present with various shades and levels of translucency. This study aimed to determine whether these variations in ceramic crowns and scan powder application affect the trueness of intraoral scanners. METHODS: Eight identical premade resin typodonts, each prepared for a crown on the maxillary right second molar, were used. Eight lithium disilicate crowns, distinguished by two levels of translucency (high and low) and four shades (BL1, A2, A3, and A4), were fabricated to an identical design and cemented onto each typodont, providing eight distinct experimental groups (2 levels of translucency × 4 shades). Reference scans were acquired using a desktop scanner. Test scans were performed ten times for each experimental group using two different intraoral scanners (Medit i700 and CEREC Primescan AC), with and without the application of scan powder (n = 10). Three-dimensional metrology software was used to assess the trueness of the intraoral scan datasets. Statistical analysis involved the Kruskal-Wallis H test, Mann-Whitney U test, and independent t-test (α=0.05). RESULTS: For powder-free intraoral scan datasets, the crown shade did not significantly affect trueness within each translucency group (P = 1.000). For both intraoral scanners, compared with low translucency groups, higher marked deviations were exhibited by high translucency groups (P<.001). Scan powder use largely mitigated these differences (P>.05) and enhanced the trueness of the intraoral scan (P<.01). CONCLUSIONS: Shade did not significantly influence the trueness of intraoral scans. High-translucency crowns were scanned with less accuracy than were low-translucency crowns. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Unlike tooth shade, translucency significantly affected the accuracy of intraoral scans. Therefore, considering the use of scan powder when scanning objects with high translucency may be beneficial.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate how different interventions can impact the bond strength of additively manufactured crown materials after cementation. DATA/SOURCES: Four online databases Ovid MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar were searched up to January 2023. Inclusion criteria were English-language publications, full-text, and in vitro studies only. Exclusion criteria were studies that did not assess the bonding of an additively manufactured crown material to cement or did not conduct any bond strength tests. An assessment of risk of bias was done in accordance with a modified Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) checklist. Each study was analysed and compared based on the interventions and bond strength results. STUDY SELECTION: Six studies satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria, five of which evaluated photopolymerised resin and one that tested zirconia manufacturing via 3D printing. All studies observed a low risk of bias. The interventions applied included the type of surface pretreatments, airborne-particle abrasion pressure, cement type, taper of crown, and artificial aging. Three studies compared the bonding performance to milled materials. CONCLUSIONS: The bond strength of crown materials additively manufactured from photopolymers presented high values and are comparable to milled materials. The systematic review demonstrated there was no definite superior cement type, but airborne-particle abrasion with alumina was generally recommended. There is a clear gap in the literature regarding the bond strength of additively manufactured crowns. Therefore, further research is necessary to evaluate its clinical applicability for permanent restorations. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Factors influencing the bond strength of additively manufactured crown materials should be evaluated so dental professionals can adopt procedures that promote the strongest bond.
